Tension erupts in Siliguri’s Haiderpara as SMC demolishes illegal structures

Siliguri, 12th June: Tension prevailed in Haiderpara area under Ward No. 40 after Siliguri Municipal Corporation carried out a demolition drive against alleged illegal constructions.

According to reports, the civic body demolished around six shops on Haiderpara Main Road during the operation. As soon as the demolition began, officials faced strong protests from locals.

Residents and traders alleged that despite a long-standing court case regarding the land in the High Court, the demolition was carried out without prior notice to the shop owners or landowners. They also claimed that their request for some time was not considered.

Following the incident, agitated traders gathered and staged protests, forcing a temporary halt to the demolition drive.

However, the operation was later resumed in the presence of police personnel, and the remaining illegal structures were fully demolished by the administration.
