Siliguri, 02nd September: Tension broke out at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) during the first-year admission process, with allegations of a scuffle and disorder emerging during counselling.
According to allegations, ABVP members from outside the college attacked interns and doctors present at a help desk set up by AIDSO to assist new students. It is alleged that several people suddenly entered the counselling hall, initially issued threats and later assaulted those present. Allegations of mobile phone theft have also surfaced.
AIDSO Secretary and intern Dr. Hiranmoy Roy alleged that they were attacked while assisting new students. He further alleged that female interns were also misbehaved with and that mobile phones and a stethoscope were taken away.
However, ABVP denied all the allegations. ABVP worker Abhijit Roy claimed that some students authorised by the college authorities were involved in administrative work, but the situation became tense after outsiders entered the premises without permission. He said police removed those who could not produce valid identity cards.
Following the incident, police from the Medical Outpost reached the spot. ACP Anirban Majumdar said the situation is under control and the admission process is continuing normally. He said no evidence of an attack by outsiders has been found so far, adding that the matter would be investigated if a written complaint is received.
Meanwhile, the college principal declined to comment on the incident.
