SMC cracks down on illegal constructions and drainage obstructions during inspection in Ward No. 08

Siliguri, 30th June: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched a strict drive to keep the city’s drainage system functional, address waterlogging issues, and take action against illegal constructions.

SMC Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai conducted an inspection across various areas under Ward No. 08 on Tuesday.

During the visit, it was observed that several shops along SF Road had constructed permanent or temporary structures over drains, creating obstacles for cleaning and worsening waterlogging during the monsoon season.

Taking immediate note of the issue, the Commissioner directed shop owners to remove all such structures within three days to ensure proper drain cleaning. He also warned that strict legal action would be taken in case of non-compliance.

Large hoardings installed in the area were also inspected, and instructions were issued to take action against those found violating regulations.

Additionally, it was alleged that several shops constructed in front of a multi-storey building on SF Road were partially blocking the entrance. The Commissioner directed officials to verify whether the constructions were legally approved.

Former councillor Shalini Dalmia welcomed the initiative, stating that the inspection was conducted to ensure that residents of the ward do not face any inconvenience.
