Siliguri, 30th June: A massive protest broke out in Dabgram I Anchal on Tuesday against a Trinamool panchayat member, with local residents staging a demonstration over various allegations. During the protest, eggs were hurled at the panchayat member.
According to allegations, panchayat member Anita Chhetri had promised to construct roads in the area but ensured that only the road in front of her own residence was developed, while local residents continue to face difficulties due to waterlogged roads. Residents also alleged that they were threatened with dire consequences when they raised the issue.
Several allegations were also levelled against Pradhan Arati Roy. Protesters claimed that long-pending issues, including repairs to river embankments and roads in the Bedgara area, have remained unresolved for a considerable period.
The protesters further alleged that although a tender worth several lakh rupees for the construction of a bicycle shed in Dabgram I Anchal was approved in 2023, no work has been carried out so far despite a board being installed at the site claiming completion of the project.
On Tuesday, local residents, along with members of the BJP Yuva Morcha, staged a protest at the Anchal office. Police from Bhakti Nagar Police Station reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
During the protest, a heated argument broke out between Pradhan Arati Roy, panchayat member Anita Chhetri, and the protesters, following which eggs were hurled. The situation was later brought under control with police intervention.
