Siliguri: Bhakti Nagar Police arrest husband and father-in-law in abetment case; woman battles for life

Siliguri, 29th June: Bhakti Nagar Police have arrested a man and his father on charges of abetment to suicide following a complaint lodged by the family of a young woman who is currently battling for her life.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Aditya Chandra Roy (19) and his father Khitish Roy, residents of Chayan Para under Ward No. 42 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

According to reports, Sonali Barman and Aditya Chandra Roy had known each other since their school days, as they studied in the same school. After attaining adulthood, the two married of their own accord around six months ago.

However, Sonali’s father alleged that after a brief period of normalcy following the marriage, Aditya Chandra Roy and his family began subjecting her to physical and mental harassment. He further stated that on Saturday, he received a phone call from Aditya’s mother informing him that Sonali had been admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).

After arriving in Siliguri from Kolkata, Sonali’s father alleged that the incident was not a case of attempted suicide but that an attempt had been made to kill his daughter, and that the suicide angle was being used to cover up the incident.

On Sunday, he lodged a written complaint against his daughter’s in-laws, accusing them of abetment to suicide. Based on the complaint, Bhakti Nagar Police arrested Sonali’s husband, Aditya Chandra Roy, and his father, Khitish Roy. Both were produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Monday.

Police have initiated further investigation into the case.
