Siliguri, 14th July: Former MLA Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, popularly known as ‘Nirbhaya Didi’, alleged that the families of two rape victims from North Bengal are yet to receive the compensation announced by the government and claimed that irregularities had taken place in the disbursement of the funds.
Addressing a press conference at the Siliguri Journalists’ Club on Tuesday, Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury said that the family of a young woman from Durgapur Tea Garden in Darjeeling district has not received the ₹10 lakh compensation announced by the government. She also alleged that the family of a minor rape victim from Jalpaiguri is yet to receive the sanctioned compensation of ₹2 lakh.
She alleged that the compensation amount had not reached the families and demanded an investigation into where the funds had gone and who was responsible for the alleged irregularities.
The former MLA also demanded that both cases be reopened. She further said that she would appeal to the new state government to ensure that the two families receive the compensation announced for them.
