Pregnant woman commits suicide in Siliguri, leaves behind a suicide note, husband in custody

Siliguri, 20th August: 33-year-old pregnant woman committed suicide in Siliguri. After recovering her suicide note, the police took her husband into custody. The tragic incident surfaced from Bidhan More near Purba Majhabari under Dabgram-Fulbari assembly. The deceased has been identified as Manda Saha.


As per the information, Manda Saha was married before and has a 10-year-old child from her first marriage. Her husband died in a road accident. Years later, she married another man named Bapi Barman. All seemed well until Bapi Barman and his mother Rekha Barman started torturing Manda mentally and physically for money and property. A meeting was also held in the presence of the local Gram Panchayat member on this issue. Although everything was going well for a few days after the meeting, Manda started being tortured again. 

The situation worsened to such an extent that Manda went to stay at her paternal house for about 15 days. On Saturday, Manda’s body was found hanging from the noose inside the house. A suicide note was also found accusing her husband, Bapi Barman of torturing her. Hence, she was forced to end her life. The police of Ashighar outpost recovered the body and sent it to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.


According to Manda’s family, she was three months pregnant. Often Bapi Barman used to beat Manda for money. About Rs 12 lakh has been given to Bapi. A case of abetment to suicide has been registered against Bapi Barman on behalf of Manda’s family. Based on the complaint, the police have taken Bapi into custody for questioning. Police have started an investigation of the whole matter.
