Siliguri, 24th August: Matigara Police’s plainclothes team arrested a deputy manager of a warehouse company in connection with the alleged theft of goods worth around ₹97 lakh from the company’s warehouse during an audit. The arrested accused has been identified as Purushottam Lal Modi, a resident of Siliguri.
According to police sources, the warehouse company operates a facility in the Matigara area, where it stores goods of various companies before supplying them to the market. A manager, deputy manager and several other employees were appointed to oversee the warehouse.
The company lodged a written complaint at Matigara Police Station on July 23, 2026, alleging that goods worth around ₹97 lakh were found missing during an audit of the warehouse. The complaint raised suspicion against the manager, deputy manager and several other employees.
Following the complaint, the investigation was handed over to the plainclothes police team of Matigara Police Station. Police questioned employees working at the warehouse and examined other aspects related to the case.
During the investigation, police reportedly suspected the involvement of deputy manager Purushottam Lal Modi. Police subsequently arrested him from Balurghat and brought him to Siliguri before producing him at court on Monday.
Police sought his custody for further questioning and investigation into the case. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted four days of police remand to the accused.
Police said that during the remand period, the accused will be questioned to gather information about other people allegedly involved in the theft of goods worth ₹97 lakh. The role of other employees is also being investigated.
Matigara Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
