Siliguri, 26th September: The North Bengal Sound Owners Association has raised eight demands, including clearer government regulations and uniform implementation of rules governing the use of sound systems. Members of the association raised the demands at a press conference at Siliguri Journalists’ Club on Saturday.
The association alleged that sound system operators are currently facing various difficulties over the 65-decibel limit on sound usage. They have demanded that the same rules be implemented for political programmes, cultural events and other functions.
According to the association, many families and workers across North Bengal depend on the sound business for their livelihood. Members alleged that during the festive season, after taking up work for events, sound operators are instructed by the administration to stop using sound systems once the permitted time has passed. At the same time, event organisers allegedly pressure them to continue operating the sound systems, leaving the operators caught between the two sides.
The association said it has submitted its concerns in writing to the Chief Minister, seeking a solution to the issue and greater clarity in the regulations. However, members alleged that they have not received any positive response so far.
The association warned that if prompt action is not taken on its eight-point demands, sound businesses across North Bengal will be completely shut from Mahalaya. Members said the shutdown will continue until their demands are fulfilled.
