Stolen gold recovered and handed back to elderly man in Siliguri

Siliguri, 26th September: Siliguri Police arrested a caregiver and her brother-in-law in connection with the theft of a gold chain from a house under the guise of caring for an elderly woman and recovered the stolen gold. Eighteen days after the incident, police completed the legal process and handed over around 8 grams of recovered gold to its rightful owner.

According to police sources, Narendra Nath Dam, a resident of Subhash Pally, had hired Labani Roy alias Rinki as a caregiver as his wife had been unwell for some time. It is alleged that on the 8th of September, Labani took advantage of an opportunity while working at the house and stole a gold chain weighing around ‘one bhori’ along with cash from a cupboard.

Reportedly, Labani handed the gold chain over to her brother-in-law, Ram Chandra Sarkar. According to police, Ram Chandra had started preparing to sell the stolen chain and melted it down to conceal its identity.

A few days later, when Narendra Nath Dam opened the cupboard, he found the gold chain and cash missing. He subsequently lodged a complaint at Siliguri Police Station, following which police launched an investigation and questioned Labani Ray.

During questioning, police traced the chain of events related to the theft. Police then launched a search for Ram Chandra Sarkar and arrested both accused. Based on their information, around 8 grams of gold, prepared by melting down the stolen chain, was recovered.

After completing the necessary legal formalities, police handed over the recovered gold to Narendra Nath Dam. After receiving his stolen property back, the elderly man became emotional and thanked Siliguri Police for their prompt action.
