Siliguri, 12th September: Multiple small and large business establishments are gradually emerging in the space beneath the flyover on Burdwan Road in Siliguri. The area, which was used by several people for residence and livelihood before the flyover became operational, is now being used by some of them to run businesses.
Some people are operating small eateries and tea stalls, while several others have set up salons beneath the flyover. They are reportedly earning their livelihood by providing hair and beard-cutting services.
Apart from shops, some portions beneath the flyover are also being used for parking four-wheelers. As a result, the space is being used for various commercial and other purposes.
According to the traders, they have been running businesses in the area for several years and their families depend on the income generated from these establishments. However, questions are now being raised over the use of the space beneath the flyover and the temporary shops that have emerged there.
It has also been alleged that despite such businesses operating for days, there is no monitoring by the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Some local residents fear that if such occupation continues to expand, the situation could become more complicated in the future.
