Mentally challenged woman burns to death in Siliguri, investigation underway

Siliguri, 11th February: Mystery shrouds the tragedy where a mentally challenged woman was burned to death in her residence on Saturday night in the Shivrampally locality of Haider Para under Ward No. 40 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. The deceased woman has been identified as Aarti Karmakar.


According to reports, Aarti was survived by three children. Her daughter was married while her elder son lives separately. The woman resided with her younger son Utpal Karmakar in the said area. Utpal Karmakar worked in a private company which led her to stay alone at home.

On Saturday, the younger son had left for work. Later in the evening, when the neighbours stepped out of their houses to a scream, they spotted Aarti’s residence engulfed in fire. Subsequently, the locals managed to douse the inferno, rescued the woman, and took her to the Siliguri District Hospital where medical professionals declared her dead.


In this regard, Aarti’s younger son Utpal Karmakar stated that his mother had been suffering from mental health issues for the past 3 to 4 years and was undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, upon receiving the news, the Bhakti Nagar police arrived at the spot and initiated an investigation while the reason behind the fire remained unclear.
