Siliguri, 11th September: Nine people were arrested by Matigara Police after a raid at an alleged illegal call centre operating at Webel IT Park in Paribahan Nagar, Siliguri. A large police contingent conducted the operation at the IT Park late Thursday night, with a search operation continuing through the night.
Among those arrested are four women and five men. Police also reportedly seized several mobile phones and a large number of computers during the operation.
According to sources, several illegal call centres have allegedly been operating at the IT Park for a long time. Police had previously conducted raids at the location as well. On Thursday night, several people reportedly fled from the IT Park as police entered the premises.
Senior officials of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate were also present during the operation. The arrested individuals were produced before the Siliguri Court on Friday.
According to police sources, these call centres allegedly made calls to people in India and abroad and defrauded them by adopting various methods to extract money.
Police had earlier conducted operations against similar illegal call centres at various locations across Siliguri, leading to several arrests. Recently, police have once again intensified operations to shut down such illegal call centres.
