Siliguri, 10th September: A joint team of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police and Pradhan Nagar Police arrested a man from Barasat for allegedly threatening Siliguri BJP Organisational District President Arun Mandal and demanding a bribe.
The arrested accused has been identified as Abdul Azim Mandal, 34, a resident of North 24 Parganas.
According to police, on 1st September, Arun Mandal received a WhatsApp call on his mobile while he was at the BJP district office in Mallaguri. The caller allegedly claimed to be an officer of the West Bengal Police and threatened him over his security and safety.
During the conversation, the caller allegedly demanded a bribe in the name of providing administrative security clearance. Suspecting the caller, Mandal asked him to provide his identity and the name of his police station, but he reportedly failed to provide clear information.
On 2nd September, Mandal lodged a written complaint at Pradhan Nagar Police Station. Based on the complaint, police began an investigation. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the SOG team also joined the investigation.
Through technical investigation, police traced the identity and location of the accused. A police team subsequently conducted an operation in Barasat on Wednesday and arrested Abdul Azim Mandal.
Following his arrest, the accused was brought from Barasat to Siliguri on Thursday and produced before the Siliguri court. Pradhan Nagar Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
