Man allegedly kills wife, attempts self-harm after marital dispute in Ambari; police investigate

Rajganj, 18th August: A woman was allegedly killed by her husband, who later attempted to end his own life by consuming poison in Ambari’s Bhotpara area under Rajganj block. The incident has created tension in the area, with police launching an investigation.

According to local sources, the deceased, Sonali Biswas, a resident of Bhatpara in Ambari under Binnaguri Gram Panchayat, had married Bhabatosh Biswas, a resident of Haldibari, around six months ago. Family members said the couple had reportedly been facing marital disputes for some time. Following the disputes, Sonali had returned to her parental home a few days ago.

On Monday, Bhabatosh reportedly went to his in-laws’ house saying that he wanted to take his wife back. He allegedly called Sonali to a rooftop beside the house at night and attacked her with a sharp weapon, killing her. He then allegedly consumed poison at the same spot.

Sonali’s family members were reportedly unaware of the incident at the time and believed that the couple had returned to Bhabatosh’s home. When Sonali did not contact them on Tuesday morning, her family members began searching for her in the surrounding area. They eventually found her body lying in a pool of blood on the rooftop, while Bhabatosh was found unconscious nearby.

Police from Bhorer Alo Police Station reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. Sonali’s body was recovered and sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem examination. Bhabatosh was also rescued in an unconscious condition and admitted to hospital for treatment.

Police recovered a sharp weapon and a bottle of poison from the scene and collected various samples for forensic examination. An investigation has been launched based on the recovered evidence and other information.

Police are investigating the circumstances behind the incident, including the reported marital dispute and whether any other factors were involved.
