Jalpaiguri Land Loser Committee protest continues for second day, several detained

Siliguri, 02nd February: Jalpaiguri Land Loser Committee sieged the Teesta Barrage Project office at Siliguri’s Teen Batti More and staged a protest on Monday. As their demonstration continued for the second day, several protestors were detained by the NJP police.

Reportedly, the police officials asked the protestors to lift the protest by today afternoon, however, they disobeyed the orders and continued their protest. Consequently, the police intervened and took the protestors to the police station.

It is to be noted that from 1984-2006, several people from Jalpaiguri gave lands for the Teesta Barrage project. The committee members alleged that although they received some compensation, no government jobs were provided to them. Hence, they are staging a protest demanding government jobs and compensation. They also demanded a meeting in this regard with the state ministers.
