Siliguri, 30th June: In a significant move to address the long-standing parking problem in the city, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Siliguri Metropolitan Police conducted an inspection of the fair ground at Kanchenjunga Stadium.
SMC Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai visited the site on Tuesday. The inspection was carried out to assess the feasibility of developing the fair ground as a dedicated parking zone.
The visit was attended by DCP (Traffic) Quazi Samsuddin Ahamed, other officials from the Municipal Corporation and police, as well as representatives from the Siliguri business community.
Officials inspected the entire area and discussed in detail the infrastructure required to accommodate maximum vehicle capacity, along with entry and exit routes for smooth movement.
After the inspection, the Commissioner said that there is potential to develop a parking facility at the Kanchenjunga Stadium fair ground, and discussions are underway regarding the infrastructure requirements and financial allocation needed for the project.
Business community representative Raju Saha stated that lack of adequate parking is one of the biggest issues in Siliguri. He said that due to the absence of designated parking spaces, vehicles are often parked along roadsides, leading to daily traffic congestion and inconvenience for both shoppers and traders.
