Indian currency smuggling attempt foiled at Indo-Nepal border in Panitanki; ₹22.5 lakh seized, 4 arrested

Kharibari, 28th January: Ahead of Nepal’s general elections, a major attempt to smuggle Indian currency was intercepted at the Panitanki checkpoint on the Indo-Nepal border in Kharibari. Security personnel recovered ₹22.5 lakh in cash from a four-wheeler, and four individuals were arrested in connection with the case. The vehicle used for smuggling was also seized.

Kharibari, 28th January: Ahead of Nepal’s general elections, a plan to smuggle Indian currency was uncovered at the Panitanki checkpoint on the Indo-Nepal border in Kharibari. Cash amounting to ₹22.5 lakh was recovered from a four-wheeler, and four people were arrested. The vehicle used in the attempt was also seized.

According to sources, routine checking was underway in the Panitanki area by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) when the four-wheeler was stopped and the cash recovered. The accused could not provide any documents explaining why such a large sum was being taken to Nepal.

Among the arrested, three are residents of Meghalaya, and one is a resident of Ramdhan Jote in the Kharibari border area. It is reported that individuals are allowed to carry only up to ₹15,000 in cash across the Indo-Nepal border. The money was allegedly being transported to fund activities related to Nepal’s upcoming elections. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
