Foundation stone laid by Siliguri’s Mayor for sewage treatment plant after long wait

Siliguri, 17th March: After a long wait finally Siliguri is getting a sewage treatment plant which will commence soon. Mayor Goutam Deb laid the foundation stone of the plant today.

It is to be noted that the Mahananda Action Plan, the Sewage Treatment Plant was started by the then Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya during the CPI (M) board. The previous CPI(M) government originally conceptualized the project with the help of the Center to make the Mahananda river pollution-free. However, after the new government came to power in the state in 2011, the work on the said sewage treatment plant, which was to be built on the banks of the Mahananda River adjacent to Siliguri’s Noukaghat, came to standstill.

Nonetheless, the Mahananda Sewage Treatment Plant is now going to resume again under the joint aegis of the present State and the Center government. Siliguri Mayor Goutam Deb laid the foundation stone of the said work today.

In this regard, the Mayor said that the said project is to make the river free from pollution by purifying the dirty water of the city and flowing it into the Mahananda river. He said that the work on projects 2 and 3 started with the cooperation of 67 percent and 33 percent Center. In the first phase, the work has been started for Rs 68 crore. He further said that the entire project would be built at a total cost of Rs 274 crore.
