Foreign cigarettes worth 50 lakh seized, two arrested in Siliguri

Siliguri, 20th August: Acting on a tip-off, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) launched operations near Goaltuli More and arrested two men along with foreign cigarettes worth 50 lakh rupees.


The arrested have been identified as Dinesh Kumar Pal and Bapi Chakraborty, residents of Uttar Pradesh, and Siliguri respectively. They were produced before the Siliguri court today.

A truck has been seized in connection to the incident. Reportedly, the cigarettes were hidden inside the driver’s cabin.


DRI lawyer Tridip Saha stated that the DRI officials, acting on a tip-off, successfully got hold of the smugglers. He further added that the recovered cigarettes which were presumably from England were being smuggled from Myanmar to Siliguri.

The Police have started an investigation into the whole incident.
