DRI Siliguri Unit arrests one with foreign gold biscuits worth crores

Siliguri, 02nd May: In a recent development, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Siliguri Unit, has arrested a suspected smuggler with foreign gold biscuits worth crores. The arrested accused has been identified as Noor Mohammad Miah (62), a resident of Gitaldaha in Cooch Behar.


Sources revealed that a consignment of foreign gold had reached Dinhata in Cooch Behar from the Indo-Bangla border, with a plan to smuggle via Siliguri. Reportedly, acting on a tip-off on Wednesday, the DRI team conducted an operation on a passenger bus arriving from Cooch Behar to Siliguri on NH 27 near Maynaguri.

During this, Noor Mohammad Miah, present on the bus as a passenger, was searched based on suspicion. During the search, the DRI recovered 14 pieces of foreign gold biscuits from both the pockets of Noor Mohammad’s trousers, and a special hideout on his waist belt.


In this regard, DRI lawyer Ratan Banik revealed that the total weight of the recovered gold is about 1 kg 624 grams, holding a market value of around Rs 1 crore 27 lakh 74 thousand. On Thursday, the accused has been produced before the Siliguri court. Significantly, the court directed for 14 day judicial custody for further investigation. Currently, the DRI is engaged in a detailed investigation of the entire matter.
