Siliguri, 04th July: The world-famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has demonstrated that natural disasters and geographical challenges have not diminished the popularity of the iconic Toy Train. Despite frequent landslides and disruptions in the hills, the heritage railway has achieved record-breaking revenue in May and June 2026.
The information was shared by DHR Director Rishabh Choudhary during the 145th World Heritage Toy Train Day celebrations held at Sukna Railway Station on Saturday.
It may be recalled that the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway commenced its journey from Siliguri to Darjeeling on 04th July, 1881. To commemorate the heritage and historical significance of the Toy Train, the North Bengal Painters Association has been organizing programmes on World Heritage Toy Train Day.
The 145th Heritage Toy Train Day celebrations at Sukna Railway Station witnessed a vibrant blend of art, culture, and heritage conservation activities. Organized on the initiative of the North Bengal Painters Association, the event saw participation from artists, students, and local residents in large numbers.
Several programmes, including sit-and-draw competitions, live painting sessions, cultural performances, and awareness campaigns, were organized during the event.
Speaking on the occasion, DHR Director Rishabh Choudhary stated that the attraction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway among domestic and international tourists continues to grow steadily. He revealed that the Toy Train generated a historic revenue of approximately ₹3.95 crore in May 2026, which was surpassed in June with earnings of around ₹3.98 crore, setting a new all-time record.
He further stated that recurring landslides in the hill areas continue to pose a major operational challenge for the Toy Train service. To address these issues permanently, discussions have been held with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). DHR and NHIDCL are expected to work jointly in the future to remove obstacles along the route and ensure safer and smoother operations of the historic railway service.
