Siliguri, 26th August: The recent changes in the Darjeeling Mail have gathered a lot of disappointments and anger from the people of Siliguri and the surrounding area. Darjeeling Mail started running from Haldibari on 15 August. Many people are demanding to restart Darjeeling Mail back to its old starting station from the New Jalpaiguri station. This time the issue of Darjeeling Mail was discussed in the seventh monthly session of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
Today, Prashant Chakraborty, councilor of Ward No. 27 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation, presented a proposal regarding Darjeeling Mail. Reportedly, the councilor presented the proposal in writing, demanding the resumption of the Darjeeling Mail train from New Jalpaiguri station. Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar also agreed to this. Earlier the Deputy Mayor had written a letter to the Railway Minister.
Today in the monthly session, this application was accepted with the consent of all. In this regard, Mayor Goutam Deb said that Darjeeling Mail is a pride of Siliguri and it is unfortunate to see the changes made. He also stated his opinion if four coaches could be installed on the said train instead of two, then there would be no problem. He also added that it would have been better if a new super specialty train could be run at the same speed. He assured of proper arrangements to be made in regard to this matter.
