Siliguri, 28th September: The Bengal Junior Ranking Tennis Tournament was organised in Siliguri for the first time, with more than 60 young players competing in the Under-10 and Under-12 boys’ and girls’ categories.
Players from Kolkata, Birbhum, Malda, Siliguri and various parts of North Bengal participated in the tournament.
Organised by Siliguri Gymkhana Club, the tournament aims to provide greater opportunities to young tennis talents from North Bengal.
Tournament organiser and CEO Roshan Ghising said children in Bengal have significant potential in tennis. He said local players would benefit if Bengal Ranking Tournaments were organised in Siliguri, allowing them to compete without travelling to Kolkata and creating opportunities to represent the Bengal team in the future.
He further said one of the key objectives behind the establishment of Siliguri Gymkhana Club in 2020 was to develop tennis infrastructure and support players in Siliguri and North Bengal.
Several players from Siliguri have already competed at the national level, and the organisers expressed hope that the region will produce players who go on to compete at national and international levels.
