Assam laborers stage demonstration outside SDO office demanding to be sent home

Siliguri, 14th May: Several migrant laborers of Assam currently residing in the Siliguri Shelter Home Quarantine center staged a sit-in protest outside the SDO office on Thursday urging the State government to initiate the process of sending them back home.

As per the information, around 50 workers of Assam are currently staying in the said quarantine center from the past several days. They alleged that they are struggling each day to cope up with the fight against the pandemic and are facing an immense shortage of food. The protestors further accused the State government of being ignorant about their helpless condition and not taking necessary steps to help them reach home.

According to sources, after the workers got involved in an argument with the Civil Defense officials today, they headed straight to the SDO office and staged a demonstration in this regard. However, they reportedly returned to the shelter home after the SDO assured them of providing a settlement soon.

In this context, Siliguri SDO Sumant Sahay stated that the stranded laborers are being gradually repatriated as per government instructions. He maintained that the process has been initiated and the people of Assam will possibly be sent home on the upcoming Monday.
