Rajganj, 09th April: An ASHA worker was allegedly assaulted for advising against the marriage of a minor. The family of the minor has been accused of storming the ASHA worker’s house, beating her, abusing her, and threatening to kill her. The incident occurred in the Sannyasikata Gram Panchayat area of Rajganj block.
On Wednesday, a group of ASHA workers gathered to protest in front of the Rajganj BDO office and Rajganj police station and submitted a memorandum demanding action.
The complainant, ASHA worker Malbika Roy, stated that she is attached to the Kalitala Sub-Health Center under the Sannyasikata Gram Panchayat. She received information about a planned marriage in her area on April 06. She visited the minor’s house but found the parents absent. The next day, she met the minor’s father on the street and informed him that the marriage could not proceed since the girl was underage. She further advised that the marriage could take place once the girl turned 18. The minor’s father left without saying much.
However, the next evening, the minor’s father and family members allegedly attacked Malbika Roy’s house. It is alleged that she was dragged by her hair and beaten on the street. The attackers also attempted to vandalize her house. When her husband and other family members attempted to intervene, they too were allegedly assaulted.
After being informed, the Rajganj police arrived at the scene, and the accused fled. Following an investigation, the police arrested two members of the minor’s family.
On Wednesday, ASHA workers submitted a memorandum at both the Rajganj BDO office and police station, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved.
They also expressed concern over their safety, stating that they are facing harassment while carrying out their duties. The ASHA workers have demanded the arrest of all the accused and appropriate legal action.
