Agnipath Scheme: Protests erupt across Siliguri

Siliguri, 17th June: Protests erupted across the country after the announcement of central government’s Agnipath Scheme. Likewise, hundreds of angry Army aspirants in Siliguri protested on Friday demanding the withdrawal of the scheme.


A protest rally was taken out from the Bhaktinagar police station area and the youths marched on Sevoke Road, Bidhan Road and reached the Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das Fly Over Road where they demonstrated by burning tires. The rally was intercepted by a huge police corps of Siliguri Metropolitan Police near the AJP pipeline. 

The protesting youth stated that the Agnipath scheme should be void and the permanent recruitment process should be initiated immediately. Reportedly, the representatives of the protesters will submit a memorandum to the administration against the Agnipath scheme.


The protesters demanded the Agnipath scheme be withdrawn at the earliest and that the permanent recruitment process, which has been stalled for a long time, should be started immediately. The demonstration eventually ended after the police assured to look into the matter. As per the information, the representatives of the protesters will submit a memorandum to the administration. Meanwhile, police force has been deployed in the city to control the situation today.
