Siliguri, 29th June: Uncertainty over postgraduate examinations at North Bengal University has triggered protests by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), demanding immediate completion of form fill-up and conduct of examinations.
On Monday, ABVP members took out a procession and entered the university administrative building, staging protests. They alleged that examinations for the second and fourth semester PG courses were scheduled from July 7, but a notification was later issued stating that the form fill-up process had been suspended due to technical issues. This, they claimed, has created serious problems for fourth-semester students.
The protesting students further stated that any delay in examinations could adversely impact those who have already secured government and private job offers or have been selected for fellowships and research programmes, as they may fail to submit their postgraduate degree within the required time, risking loss of opportunities.
A memorandum was submitted to Assistant Registrar Debashis Bhattacharya and Assistant Controller of Examinations Shankari Chakraborty by ABVP members, urging swift resolution of the issue and immediate conduct of examinations.
ABVP North Bengal University unit member Gopal Saha stated that the university is currently functioning without a Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, and warned that if examinations are not held, the future of many students will be affected. He also said that if the issue is not resolved, a larger agitation will be launched.
On the other hand, Assistant Controller of Examinations Shankari Chakraborty stated that examinations can be conducted only after the higher authorities resolve the issue.
