Siliguri, 04th October: Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar visited his former department at North Bengal University during the concluding ceremony of the university’s Silver Jubilee year celebrations. He was accompanied by State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh, awho is also an alumnus of the Botany Departmen.
The visit to their former department brought back memories for both ministers. During the visit, Sukanta Majumdar planted a tree on the department premises.
Recalling his days at the university, Majumdar said that North Bengal University is his own university, where he completed his post-graduation and later pursued his PhD while working. He recalled living in Shiv Mandir and described the university as his “second home”, saying he spent some of the best days of his life there.
Majumdar also said that although he had previously visited the university as an MP, this was his first visit as Union minister. He added that had he not entered politics, he would have tried to return to the university.
Speaking about the administrative issues facing North Bengal University, Majumdar said discussions had been held with the Principal Secretary, the State Higher Education Minister and MLAs regarding the lack of leadership at the university and possible measures to address the issue.
He said efforts were underway to resolve the university’s problems at the earliest.
