Track subsidence near New Farakka disrupts rail services, Siliguri-Kolkata passengers turn to buses

Siliguri, 04th September: Train services between North Bengal and South Bengal have been severely disrupted following track subsidence near New Farakka, leaving passengers facing considerable difficulties. With several important long-distance trains cancelled or diverted, a large number of passengers travelling from Siliguri to Kolkata are now relying on buses as an alternative.

In view of the situation, the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) has decided to operate additional buses to meet the needs of passengers. Normally, around five buses depart daily for Kolkata from Siliguri’s Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus, but seats on these services have already been filled due to the disruption in rail services.

It has been stated that additional government buses may be put into service if required. Meanwhile, private buses are also witnessing a sharp increase in passenger demand, with allegations of fare hikes taking advantage of the situation.

Many passengers unable to secure seats on government buses are reportedly being forced to travel to Kolkata on private buses by paying higher fares. As a result, passengers are facing difficulties due to cancelled trains as well as increased costs for alternative transportation.

If rail services are not restored soon, the pressure on buses operating on the Siliguri-Kolkata route and the rise in fares could increase further, raising concerns among passengers.
