Siliguri, 22nd September: Police from the Khalpara Outpost have arrested an individual in connection with the alleged theft of around ₹8 lakh in cash from a jewellery shop in the Agrasen Road area of Naya Bazaar, Siliguri.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shiv Chaudhary (23), alias ‘Banta’.
According to police sources, the theft took place on the morning of September 16, when the shutter of the jewellery shop was allegedly forced open. The shop owner subsequently informed the police that around ₹8 lakh in cash had been stolen from the premises.
Following the complaint, police from the Khalpara Outpost launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the area. Based on the footage, investigators allegedly identified the person suspected to be involved in the theft.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Chaudhary from the Hemanta Basu Colony area on Monday night.
The accused was produced before the Siliguri Court on Tuesday. Police have sought his remand and are conducting further interrogation in an attempt to recover the allegedly stolen cash.
