Siliguri, 23rd October: Social workers in Siliguri have come forward to help dhaki families from Malda district who were affected by severe flooding shortly before Durga Puja. As part of the initiative, the families were provided with ration supplies and essential food items, while new clothes were distributed for their children.
Siliguri Town Station, which holds heritage status, has long been associated with the city’s Durga Puja traditions. Every year, dhakis from distant areas arrive at the station before the festival and travel to different puja pandals across the city to perform. Over the years, these traditional drummers have become an integral part of Siliguri’s cultural heritage.
Most of the dhakis who arrive in Siliguri during Puja are from Malda district. This year, severe flooding in Malda shortly before the festival disrupted the lives of several dhaki families, leaving them struggling with difficult circumstances.
To provide relief to the affected families and bring some happiness to their children, social workers arranged the distribution of ration supplies, essential food items and new clothes.
The dhakis usually arrive in Siliguri a few days before Durga Puja and return to their villages after the festivities conclude. While their rhythmic performances bring the festive spirit alive at puja pandals, many of their families continue to face financial hardship back home.
Recognising their difficulties following the floods, the social workers came together to support the families before the dhakis returned home, extending a helping hand to those affected by the disaster.
