Siliguri, 23rd October: Durga Puja concluded peacefully in Siliguri under tight security, with no major untoward incidents reported during the four days of festivities. However, police arrested 255 people across seven police stations for creating disturbances, harassing women and girls, and engaging in fights while intoxicated.
Around 2,000 police personnel were deployed by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police to maintain law and order throughout the celebrations. Special officers of SP rank and night-vision cameras were used to strengthen surveillance from Shashthi to Navami.
Siliguri Police Commissioner Syed Waquar Raza personally patrolled the city on a motorcycle alongside other officers until late at night to monitor the security arrangements.
Winners Team personnel and Pink Patrolling Vans were deployed to ensure women’s safety, while special anti-pickpocket teams kept watch at crowded pandals.
Despite the large crowds, eight road accidents were reported during the Puja period, resulting in three deaths.
On Navami night, the Siliguri Junction Traffic Guard conducted a special drive against modified motorcycle silencers, seizing them and issuing challans to violators.
