SMC bulldozes illegal shops built in parking area in Siliguri

Siliguri, 12th March: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) continues its campaign against illegal construction and encroachment in the city.

On Wednesday, SMC took action against unauthorized structures by demolishing two illegally built shops in the parking area of a multi-storey building in Ward No. 02.

As per reports, after the construction of the building, two shops were illegally set up in the parking space and rented out. Upon receiving complaints, the Municipal Corporation directed the building owner to clear the shops and restore the parking area. However, the instructions were ignored.

The matter later reached the High Court, which ordered the demolition of the illegal structures. Acting on the court’s directive, SMC vacated the parking area by running a bulldozer on the shops on Wednesday.

Following the demolition, shop owners expressed their dissatisfaction, questioning how SMC had issued trade licenses if the shops were illegal.

Meanwhile, the building owner alleged that the demolition was carried out without providing them adequate time and pointed out that several other illegal constructions remain untouched by the authorities.
