Siliguri’s idol-making hub ‘Kumartuli’ facing hardships amid COVID-19 pandemic

Siliguri, 05th June: With the rising number of positive cases across the country, the air is gloomy in Kumartuli, which is reeling under mounting losses due to cancellation of idol bookings triggered by the prolonged period of lockdown.

Idols are made in Kumartuli throughout the year. However, this year, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the scenario has completely changed in the city. Several people are living under a financial crisis and are struggling to make ends meet. While Kumartuli usually bustles at this time of year for Durga puja preparations, it is now almost empty with the largest association of artisans.

In this context, the artisans stated that they have not received any orders for the past three months. As a result, they are suffering from deep losses. They are also worried regarding the slump in sales for Durga puja idols work for which will start shortly afterwards.
