Siliguri, 22nd September: Gobinda Sarkar from Ghogomali has won a gold medal in the 70kg category at the 5th Indo-Nepal Karate Championship 2026 held in Kalimpong. He was also named the ‘Best Fighter’ of the championship.
The championship saw participation from athletes from India, Nepal and Bangladesh, with around 310 competitors taking part in the event.
Gobinda trains in kickboxing, karate and MMA and has also won the South Asia Cup three consecutive times. Alongside working at a private company, he trains other athletes in Siliguri.
He bears the expenses of his training, participation in competitions and other related costs himself. Gobinda said that government support would create opportunities for him to participate in more international competitions.
He wants to play more matches in the coming days and bring greater recognition to the country as well as Siliguri through his achievements.
