Siliguri, 22nd September: Khalpara Outpost police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the theft of around ₹8 lakh in cash from a shop in the Agrasen Road area of Nayabazar in Siliguri. Police arrested the accused and recovered ₹6.15 lakh of the stolen money.
The arrested accused has been identified as Raj Choudhury alias Banta, a resident of Maharaj Colony.
According to police sources, the theft was executed by breaking the shutter of the shop. Shop owner Pradeep Agarwal lodged a complaint at Khalpara Outpost, reporting that around ₹8 lakh in cash had been stolen from the shop.
Following the complaint, police examined CCTV footage. The footage allegedly showed the accused approaching the shop with an umbrella before breaking the shutter and entering the premises. Based on the investigation, police identified the accused.
Subsequently, police launched an operation in the Hemanta Basu Colony area on Monday night and arrested the accused. He was produced before the Siliguri court on Tuesday, following which police took him on remand for questioning.
During interrogation, police recovered ₹6.15 lakh based on information provided by the accused. Police are continuing their investigation to recover the remaining amount and determine whether others were involved in the theft.
