Retired government employee falls victim to pickpocket in Siliguri’s Railgate Market

Siliguri, 27th July: The city of Siliguri is witnessing a rapid rise in incidents of theft, snatching, and pickpocketing. Yesterday, a distressing case of pickpocketing occurred with Amitabh Chakraborty, a retired government employee of the PHE department and a resident of Ward No. 17, Siliguri. After withdrawing his pension from a bank at Courtmore, Amitabh Chakraborty went shopping in the Railgate market. Without his knowledge, a miscreant cunningly pushed him from behind and swiftly escaped with a bundle of Rs 500 notes amounting to Rs 20,000 from his bag.


Amitabh Chakraborty realized the theft only after some time when he checked his bag. The pickpocket executed the act so deftly that Amitabh Chakraborty remained unaware of the incident. Recounting the incident, Amitabh Chakraborty mentioned that after withdrawing about Rs 30,000 from the bank, he proceeded to the market adjacent to Railgate. There, a young man pushed him twice from behind. Later, upon examining his bag, he discovered that a bundle of 40 Rs 500 notes was missing.

Amitabh Chakraborty promptly informed the market committee and obtained CCTV footage identifying the pickpocket. He also sought assistance from Mayor Goutam Deb, who promptly directed the Siliguri police station to investigate the matter. Amitabh Chakraborty lodged a verbal complaint at the police station and intends to file a written complaint today, seeking justice for the incident.
