Rajganj, 22nd September: Twenty-three buffaloes died after allegedly being transported in a cramped container in Rajganj. Police intercepted the vehicle before the suspected smuggling attempt could be completed.
According to reports, traffic personnel on duty spotted the container parked near Fatapukur Traffic More on Tuesday morning. The driver and helper were reportedly absent from the spot. Suspicion arose after blood and other fluids were noticed leaking from inside the container.
The Rajganj Police were informed, following which a team reached the spot and shifted the container to a farm near Bandhunagar. When the container was opened, the buffaloes were found crammed inside, with some allegedly having their legs tied with ropes.
Preliminary information revealed that the container was carrying 32 buffaloes, of which nine were found alive while 23 had died. The surviving animals were subsequently taken care of, while the container was brought to Rajganj Police Station.
Police sources said the container had originated from Uttar Pradesh. A search has been launched for the driver and helper, who reportedly fled the spot. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident and the suspected smuggling attempt.
