Siliguri, 01st September: The number of wards under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation has been increased from 47 to 63 following a new government notification.
According to reports, the state Department of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development has initiated the process of reorganising the wards under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. However, it has not yet been clarified which of the existing 47 wards will be divided to create the new wards or what the boundaries of the new wards will be.
Of the 47 existing wards under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, 14 fall within the administrative area of Jalpaiguri district. There had been demands for a long time to divide larger wards and reorganise their boundaries.
The number of wards has been increased with the aim of maintaining a balance in population and making civic services more effective, according to reports.
