Man from Sikkim arrested with brown sugar at a lodge near Siliguri Junction

Siliguri, 31st August: Police arrested a man from Sikkim after allegedly recovering brown sugar worth lakhs of rupees from a lodge room near Siliguri Junction. The arrested accused has been identified as 40-year-old Yuvraj Chhetri, a resident of Gangtok, Sikkim. He is reportedly a driver by profession.

According to police sources, Yuvraj Chhetri had arrived in Siliguri from Sikkim on Sunday and checked into the lodge near Siliguri Junction as a passenger. On Monday afternoon, acting on confidential information, a plainclothes police team led by Pradhan Nagar Police Station IC BD Sarkar conducted a raid at the lodge room.

During the search, police allegedly recovered a packet of brown sugar from Yuvraj Chhetri. The seized substance is reportedly valued at lakhs of rupees.

During preliminary questioning, police suspect that Yuvraj used to collect brown sugar in Siliguri and smuggle it to Sikkim. According to police sources, he would receive deliveries of brown sugar at hotels or lodges.

Police suspect that Yuvraj had come to Siliguri from Sikkim this time to collect a consignment and was preparing to return to Sikkim before being arrested.

Police will produce the accused before the Siliguri court on Tuesday. Investigators are trying to determine who delivered the brown sugar to Yuvraj at the lodge and who else may be involved in the alleged network.
