Siliguri, 18th August: The Siliguri Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested a couple with brown sugar during an anti-narcotics operation in the Salugara area of Siliguri on Tuesday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Nisha Rai and her husband Cheten Bhutia. During the operation, the NCB also seized ₹71,000 in cash and a black SUV.
According to NCB sources, Nisha Rai and Cheten Bhutia were allegedly involved in transporting brown sugar from Siliguri to Sikkim for further distribution and sale. The agency had reportedly been monitoring their activities for some time.
Based on specific information, an NCB team, with assistance from Bhakti Nagar Police Station, conducted an operation in the Salugara area near the Army camp on Tuesday. During the operation, the team stopped a vehicle under suspicious circumstances and conducted a search.
A packet containing brown sugar was allegedly recovered from a concealed compartment inside the vehicle’s bonnet. The team subsequently searched Nisha Rai’s bag and recovered ₹71,000 in cash.
The NCB arrested both Nisha Rai and Cheten Bhutia on charges related to drug trafficking and seized the brown sugar, cash and vehicle.
The agency is now investigating the alleged supply network and working to identify others who may be connected to the operation.
The two arrested accused are scheduled to be produced before a Siliguri court on Wednesday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
