Lataguri, 05th September: State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh called for the expansion of tourism in the Dooars while stressing the need to protect forests and the environment while attending an event in Lataguri on Saturday.
Lataguri, located near Gorumara National Park in Jalpaiguri district, is a prominent tourism destination known for its forests, water bodies and rich wildlife. The local tourism sector has grown significantly around these natural attractions, with several initiatives launched to further promote tourism in the region.
Ahead of World Tourism Day on September 27, the State Tourism Department, Federation of Bengal Hoteliers and other tourism-related organisations jointly organised a series of programmes in Lataguri. Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh, Jalpaiguri MP Jayanta Kumar Roy and other dignitaries attended the event.
The programme began with a marathon and a discussion meeting, followed by the inauguration of two luxury long-distance sleeper buses operated by a travel agency.
A walkathon focusing on nature and environmental conservation was subsequently organised through the streets of Lataguri. The day’s programmes concluded with the inauguration of Lataguri Water Park, a new facility focused on adventure tourism. The park offers activities including boating, rock climbing and other adventure sports.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Shankar Ghosh highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the State Tourism Department to promote tourism across West Bengal, including the launch of a new tourism logo.
He stressed that the growth of tourism in the Dooars must go hand in hand with the conservation of its forests and natural environment, emphasising the need for sustainable tourism development in the region.
