Siliguri, 08th October: A man has been accused of attempting to molest a young woman at his rented house in the Madhya Shantinagar area of Siliguri on the pretext of performing an exorcism. The accused, identified as Somnath Barui, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the complaint, the accused took the young woman and her mother to his rented house on Wednesday on various pretexts. He then allegedly took the young woman inside a room on the pretext of performing an exorcism and asked her mother to remain outside.
The young woman alleged that the accused attempted to molest her inside the room. She managed to escape from the house and later informed her family members and local residents about the incident.
Following the incident, local residents reportedly detained and assaulted the accused. Police from Ashighar Outpost reached the spot after being informed and took him to the outpost.
A written complaint was subsequently lodged at Ashighar Outpost, following which police arrested Somnath Barui based on the complaint.
The accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Thursday. Police from Ashighar Outpost are investigating the incident.
