Justice after 26 years, Manager and clerk arrested in Uttarbanga Kshetriya Gramin Bank Kharibari branch scam

Siliguri, 28th July: After 26 years of court proceedings of the bank scam in Kharibari the manager and clerk have been proven guilty of the crime by the CBI Court. The said accused have been fined along with imprisonment.


According to the information, in the year 1991 – 1995, there was a scam of Rs 04 lakhs from the accounts of three non-existent people in the Uttarbanga Kshetriya Gramin Bank Kharibari branch. This matter came to notice by the bank management and administration in 1996. The matter was reported and the case was handed over to CBI. 

During the investigation, the investigating team came to know that many other bank officials were also involved in the said scam. After a few days of investigation and further interrogation, the CBI arrested three bank employees related to this scam, the bank manager identified as Manoj Kumar Chakraborty, senior clerk, Subhash Chandra Roy, and cashier Deepak Banik. The CBI further started gathering pieces of evidence against the then alleged accused. A charge sheet of two thousand pages was submitted to the Siliguri court. 


The first hearing of this case was conducted in Kolkata High Court and then a few years later, the case was transferred to the Darjeeling District Court. In the end, the case was transferred to Siliguri court after the CBI court was formed on the premises. 

After years of court hearings and proceedings in the CBI court, a statement of a total of 22 people was recorded in the court. In which the bank management, CBI investigation team, and other bank employees were involved. Today, the Siliguri CBI Court, after hearing the arguments of the defense and the government side, gave its verdict. 

The alleged three accused of the bank, namely bank manager Manoj Kumar Chakraborty, and senior clerk Subhash Chandra Roy were convicted by CBI Court Judge Manvendra Mohan Sarkar in the Uttar Banga Kshetriya Gramin Bank scam. Whereas, cashier Deepak Banik was proven innocent and acquitted of all the charges of crime.   

Manoj Kumar Chakraborty was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 was imposed on him. On the other hand, Judge Manvendra Mohan Sarkar sentenced Subhash Chandra Roy, the main accused to rigorous 05 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 01 lakh. 

Speaking on this subject, Deepak Banik’s lawyer Ratan Banik told that his client had no hand in this scam. After 26 years of court hearings, and evidences the CBI court finally gave the verdict on the case. 

At the same time, on this decision of the CBI court, Abhay Chatterjee, the lawyer of the convicted manager Manoj Kumar Chakraborty, told that his client had no hand in this scam and was innocent of the charges. He further added that they will appeal to the High court to plead their innocence.
