Journalists attacked while covering a conflict between two TMC groups in Rajganj

Rajganj, 23rd July: Few journalists were attacked while covering a conflict between two groups of Trinamool Congress.

On Friday, the party’s SC/ST/OBC cell went to submit a memorandum to the Trinamool-led Sukhani Gram Panchayat Pradhan. Several TMC activists marched with party flags and reached the gram panchayat office. However, as they were not allowed to enter the office, two groups of the party started fighting over it.

Allegedly, 7 journalists were attacked at that time by the party workers. They were rushed to Rajganj Rural Hospital for treatment. For the time being, a verbal complaint has been lodged at Rajganj Police Station on behalf of the journalists.

Purnachandra Roy, acting president of Rajganj block Trinamool SC/ST/OBC cell, said that Gram Panchayat Pradhan Shampa Dutta committed irregularities in the 100-day work. Every job card holder went to the gram panchayat office with a number of demands, including 100-day work, cancellation of invalid job cards, issuance of new cards, and public display of Awas Yojana list. ‘But we were not allowed to enter the office. Apart from us, the journalists were also attacked. This is very reprehensible. The incident will be reported to the police.’, he added.

Sheikh Omar Farooq, vice-president of the Trinamool Yuva Congress in Jalpaiguri district, said that no prior notice was given in advance regarding the memorandum. Besides, those who came to give the memorandum are not TMC members.
