Siliguri, 06th October: A forensic team from the Jalpaiguri Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) examined two sites in Tarabari under Matigara Police Station and Dhimal under Bagdogra Police Station on Tuesday in connection with the deaths of two people following a mob assault over suspicion of cattle theft.
The forensic team spent more than four hours examining the two locations and collected various evidence and clues. Police expect the forensic report to provide important information for the ongoing investigation.
According to information, early Saturday morning, a mob allegedly vandalised and set fire to two suspected vehicles in the Tarabari area over suspicion of cattle theft. Five people travelling in the vehicles tried to flee, but the mob allegedly chased them and caught them in the Dhimal area, where they were reportedly beaten.
Shahed Akhtar, a resident of Chopra, died at the spot, while Saad Mohammad, a resident of Haryana, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). Three others, Aamir, Arif Khan and Akram Khan, were injured and treated under police supervision.
During the investigation, police arrested seven people. The arrested accused have been identified as Rakib Mohammad, Noor Mohammad, Mohammad Anarul, Mohammad Azad, Aamir, Arif Khan and Akram Khan. According to police, they are residents of Uttar Dinajpur, Bihar and Haryana.
All seven were produced before the Siliguri court, which sent them to three days of police custody.
Police said some local suspects had entered an Army area during the incident. Army personnel detained four people and, after questioning them, submitted a written complaint to Bagdogra Police Station.
Meanwhile, police are identifying those allegedly involved in the mob assault. Police said no person found guilty in the case will be spared and that necessary action will be taken after the forensic report is received.
