Jalpaiguri Karala bridge re-opened after a long wait

Jalpaiguri, 04th March: After a long wait, the Jalpaiguri Karala bridge, popularly known as Dolna Bridge, has re-opened. As of now, people cross the bridge on foot or on bicycles. However, sources say that the bridge will be open for traffic movement from this week itself.

It is to be noted that the North Bengal Development Department adopted the initiative to renovate the bridge as it was lying in a deplorable condition. The department had promised to build a new bridge within six months after demolishing the previous one. But after almost three years, as the bridge construction work was not completed, the citizens staged multiple demonstrations.

Speculating it to be a political move, locals said that the North Bengal Development Department re-opened the bridge ahead of the upcoming polls, without even inaugurating it.
