Jalpaiguri: Elderly woman loses her job, son denies to look after her

Jalpaiguri, 10th June: After sighting an elderly woman wandering aimlessly at the Teesta Chand area in Jalpaiguri’s Saradapally, on Tuesday night, the locals immediately reported the incident to the Kotwali police station.


After exchanging a few conversations with the elderly woman, the police learned that her name is Rupa Roy and she is a resident of the Jalpaiguri Sarkar Para area. She worked as a domestic helper in the past however, due to old age, she is unable to work anymore.

As Rupa Roy was allegedly denied care and maintenance by her son, the 70-year-old roams around in the streets and takes rest in the Jalpaiguri Saradapally area. Despite this, she hesitated to lodge any complaint against her son.


According to the information, the Kotwali police helped her reach home that very night. However, on Wednesday morning, her son Sunil Roy refused to look after his mother. He stated that he does not own a house of his own and is currently living with his in-laws. Likewise, the elderly’s granddaughter too denied taking care of her.

Following this, arrangements are being made to keep the helpless woman in a night shelter home under the municipality.
