News Desk: On Monday, India marked a major shift in the legal framework with the implementation of three new criminal laws viz. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. Significantly, the new law is to be effective immediately from July 01st.
According to reports, the first FIR under the Indian Penal Code has been filed in Delhi since the new law came into effect. The FIR has been filed against a street vendor accused of unlawfully occupying public land for commercial purposes.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replaces the Indian Penal Code, while the Criminal Procedure Code has been succeeded by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Simultaneously, the Indian Evidence Act has been restructured as the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
